What Are Bonsai Trees?

Bonsai is an ancient Japanese art of shaping plants to obtain miniature version of trees in small containers. In Japanese, the word “bon” means a tray-like or low-sided pot while “sai” means planting, thus bonsai would literally mean “plantings in a tray”. This Japanese art can be traced back over a thousand years ago although it actually originated from China. This art also exists in other cultures – known as “hon non bộ” in Vietnam and “penjing” in China.

Cultivation

The bonsai art is for a long-term cultivation through growing one or more plants in a container under proper care to obtain a natural yet aesthetically pleasing miniature of a tree. A bonsai may come from a seedling or cutting wherein it is adequately provided with sunshine, water, fertilizer and soil to grow healthily; it is also subjected under wiring, trimming, pruning and repotting to obtain a miniature version with the desired design or shape.
